Here is what google is looking for in their employees:

… analytical reasoning. Google is a data-driven, analytic company. When an issue arises or a decision needs to be made, we start with data. That means we can talk about what we know, instead of what we think we know.

… communication skills. Marshalling and understanding the available evidence isn’t useful unless you can effectively communicate your conclusions.

… a willingness to experiment. Non-routine problems call for non-routine solutions and there is no formula for success. A well-designed experiment calls for a range of treatments, explicit control groups, and careful post-treatment analysis. Sometimes an experiment kills off a pet theory, so you need a willingness to accept the evidence even if you don’t like it.

… team players. Virtually every project at Google is run by a small team. People need to work well together and perform up to the team’s expectations.

… passion and leadership. This could be professional or in other life experiences: learning languages or saving forests, for example. The main thing, to paraphrase Mr. Drucker, is to be motivated by a sense of importance about what you do.

Another good read is an essay by Paul Graham called: What you’ll wish you’d known.

I am a fan of BBC news. They cover stories that you don’t hear about here in US.
However, when I browsed to BBC web site I wanted to puke.

It has all the functionality that I don’t care for…
It lets you customize the site to your preferences (choose colors, etc…)
It breaks down the site into boxes that you can drag around from one corner to another.
It lets you configure which news you want to see.

Who cares, I want to read news. I’m not here to design my bbc web page.

In the end, the site looks boxy and plain ugly.

I say that web designers for BBC need to get together and browse through New York Times or Guardian

BBC’s web site needs an overhaul.

Get rid of all that customization junk.

Choose a clean layout.

Put your news first!

Google pages has been around for a while. However, I still find people (mostly local small business owners) who are looking for web designers to build them a simple web page. All they want is web presence, they want to be online. That is where google pages comes in.

Interface is simple.
Just point and click.
Fill in content.
Post pictures.
Choose layout and colors.
Click publish and you are on the web!
Done.

One drawback is that you can’t use your own domain name. Like http://www.mysitename.com. Your url will be something like http://mysitename.googlepages.com.
